Property tax issues surface at County Farm Bureau annual meeting
Sheridan County Farm Bur-eau held its 51st annual meeting on Tuesday evening, October 29, at the McClusky Elementary School with Jeffrey Missling of Fargo as guest speaker.
Missling reminded members that FB State Convention will be held in Bismarck on Nov. 22-26.
Missling also spoke briefly on four main issues that will be addressed at the convention.
(1) Property tax reform: just because the State has increased funding for K-12 education doesn’t mean local property taxes are lower. There is still a need for reform that may mean a possible ballot measure.
(2) Establishing a Homestead tax credit, a $4,000 or 50 percent of current tax for your home and $2,000 or 50 percent of current tax for other property.
(3) Change mills to dollars in calculations and budgets so people can understand tax dollars levied.
(4) Zero-based budgeting so tax entities have to establish and vote on new budgets each year and justify percentage increases.
About 55 members and guests attended with President Randy Melom opening with a welcome. The Pledge of Allegiance, introductions and the early bird door prize drawing were next.
