Playing it safe during Farm Bureau Week

Sheridan County Farm Bureau will be “Playing it Safe with Farm Safety,” for this year’s celebration of North Dakota Farm Bureau Week, March 7-13.
“As spring approaches, farmers and ranchers are calving and gearing up for work in the fields. It’s a great time to remind people to not get in too much of a hurry,” said Sheridan County Farm Bureau President Kevin Bender. “We had a number of farm injuries and deaths across the state last year, and we’d like to see that change this year. Hopefully, if we increase awareness, we can make a positive difference and see fewer of those sad headlines about an injury or death on the farm.”
Sheridan County Farm Bureau reminds people to:
Practice caution around farm animals – Although they look friendly, large animals are a major source of injuries, especially to children, on the farm or ranch.
Remember that grain bins and flowing grain can kill – Don’t take chances. Never enter a grain bin alone. Have at least two people at the bin to assist in case of problems. Use a safety harness or line when entering a bin.
Never break the rule, “No seat, no rider” - It can be especially hard when a child wants a ride, but it’s important to practice “tough love” and never allow an extra rider on any vehicle, whether it is a lawnmower, and ATV or a tractor. More than half of all child deaths on the farm involve a tractor or other vehicle with only one seat.
