Lamesa veterinarian Michelle Bessire, DVM, of Brock Veterinary Clinic received the Equine Practitioner of the Year Award at the Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA) Annual Conference on February 28. This award is given to the veterinarian who has displayed outstanding professional performance as an equine practitioner in the past year, as nominated by TVMA members and selected by the TVMA Awards Committee.
A 2007 graduate of the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Bessire has made a splash in her eight-year career. "When you’ve seen that many horses a year for a few years, you get good at it," said Bo Brock, DVM, DABVP, a TVMA member and owner of Brock Veterinary Clinic. "And she’s taken it a step further; she’s become really, really good at it." At the clinic, Dr. Bessire and her associates see about 11,000 horses a year, consisting of a varied array of racehorses, rodeo horses, polo horses and ranch horses. Despite her primary focus on equine medicine, the nature of the rural practice means treating any animal that comes through the clinic doors.
Dr. Bessire is known for taking students under her wing while they are working at the clinic, often inviting them for dinner at her home with her husband and twin 3-year-old sons. "I have learned from Dr. Bessire that what this profession is truly about is taking the extra time and going the extra mile for each patient," said Marianne Mullen, a first-year veterinary student at Texas A&M University. "Some of my best memories were tackling an emergency case in the middle of the night with Dr. Bessire."
