July DU supper provides blue-grass music treat

The day was fine for an outdoor event. The vantage point on the hill, with a shelter over the dining tables, gave everyone a view of the Cross Ranch as well as the new metal signage.
The short drive south of the blinking light on Highway 200 prepares one for the ranch, if you came from that direction. There were birds and wildlife easily viewed from the road, with a line of seagulls sitting on bales as if watching the traffic come and go for their personal amusement. The winding gravel road reminds travelers that they are stepping back a bit into nature for the evening.
Cottonwoods (trees) are also nothing new to the site, but the Cotton Wood band was. The Ducks Unlimited guests were treated to lively bluegrass music and humor dished about with friendly tell-all tales on each other from the band. There were vocals and instrumental selections, with toe-tapping and sentimental numbers mixed well.
The band members are Lee Benjamin, banjo and former bass player. He also sang lead vocals and baritone harmony. He is from Center. The other three band members are all from Washburn: Jill Weise’s clear vocals and bass anchor for the tunes helps keep the band’s beat going. She was there with her personal sound man, husband Bob.
