A 2003 study by CDC scientists published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) estimates that 36,000 people die each year from seasonal flu, and another 200,000 people are hospitalized. CDC recommends that everyone over the age of six months be immunized each fall with the flu vaccine.
The immunization takes just five minutes and can protect those who are vaccinated from getting sick with the flu.
Seasonal flu is a serious and contagious respiratory infection caused by the influenza virus. Symptoms include chills, fever, sore throat, dry cough, headaches and body aches, ranging from mild to severe enough to require hospitalization.
Winter is generally considered peak flu season, with most flu outbreaks occurring in January and February. The outbreak may start as early as October or as late as April, and it is important to get flu vaccinations early for protection for the entire flu season.
The flu vaccine is active against three different strains of the flu virus; each year these three most likely viruses scientists predict will occur are put into the vaccine. The vaccines are different each and that is why it is important to be vaccinated annually.
Many people believe that the flu vaccine can give a person the flu. This is false. The flu shot is made up of dead viruses that are not capable of causing the flu. A large amount of research has been conducted regarding this common concern and the vaccine has never been linked to causing the flu.
