Flags retired with honor
By ALLAN TINKER
A group of American Legion members, auxiliary members and the general public gathered on June 12 at the Goodrich American Legion
hall to retire American flags with honor. A large number of flags had been collected and stored in the Legion building and Goodrich
Legion Commander Roger Tessmann led the group in the official ceremonies and burning of the retired flags. No one had counted them, but the ceremony lasted quite some time until the piles were finally gone. The color guard was present for the formalities and Tessmann read a short story on a personal view of honoring the flag. Tessmann stated the story was from singer Johnny Cash, whose patriotism was well known though he had never served in the nation’s military services. Among those present were Tessmann, Tim Erdmann, Don Hagen, Myron Berg,
Welborn Majors, Tom Lindelien Cecil Alg, Terry Feickert, James Paulus, Brian Galvin, Greg and Nancy Reime, Karen Feickert, Wyatt Korb,
Tim Buckholtz, Misty Galvin, Josie Galvin, and many other onlookers.
