Christmas Memories

Christmas Memories

By ALLAN TINKER
Myldred Swanson is one of the new residents at Sheridan Memorial Home. She said, “Sixty years on the farm and all of a sudden you are old” She added that she is happy to
be here, with someone around all the time. Christmas when she was young, she recalled her mother Glorene (Dirks) Sayler baking cookies at Christmas in such enormous quantities
that there were some left for Easter. Christmas with family and going to church at Zion Congregational church n the country, a church where she was also confirmed. “I was among all the Saylers confirmed, there was just one other, a Braun girl. She went to country school through seven and one-half years, finishing in Underwood. She graduated from the
high school there in 1953. “In school there were programs and trees were real. They also had real candles on them, tinsel, popcorn garlands and paper ring chains. There were some Christmas ornaments but not overdone,” she recalled. Myldred has an identical twin sister Myrtle, who lives in Garrison. They are the only children left of the one boy and four girls. ‘Back then, we always dressed alike; they don’t do that much anymore.” Myldred lost her husband Wally (Wallace) January 19, 2020. They had been married 66 years. They had four girls and three boys.
