Buy quality and restore good memories
By ALLAN TINKER
Stefon Scheurer works hard at what he likes to do, renovating automobiles, pickups and other motorized machines. This one is a combined effort with his father Shannon, who straightened and painted the frame. The 1971 K-10 Chevrolet is a half-ton four-wheel drive truck, purchased new by Melvin Schindler and used on the family farm with his
son Tim, who eventually took it into the Scheurer’s for repair and engine replacement. Stefon fixed rust spots, replaced trim, primed and repainted the truck. The pictured
color is a “close shade” to the original color. Schindler said that Stefon did an “amazing job” for his work on the truck and admires how hard he worked. The vehicle is now restored, ready to parade or be driven in pleasurable memories of all the hard farm miles of work it has in its history. Many area vehicles are salvaged to be useful to the next generations, long after they have been retired from “active duty.” Schindler told the story behind the truck’s lifetime. He bought the truck from his dad Melvin in 1976 when dad purchased a new one. There were 133,000 miles on it when it was parked in 2005. When it was first taken in to be repaired, the goal was a new engine and seat. With one engine of a different size replaced before, the second new one, from Phoenix Machine in Arizona, returned to the original 350 engine originally installed in this style pickup.
