Being quick on her feet works for new vet
By ALLAN TINKER
Kara Mauch chose veterinary medicine because she grew up with animals and surrounded by agriculture. “I was inspired to go to vet school by being surrounded by ranchers in my life and wanting to get a job to serve them and help them out. I love my job; I enjoy it a lot.”
Being quick on her feet has been good for Mauch, “Rarely do things go as I plan.” She mentioned a few of the things that have happened to make work interesting at Sheridan Animal Hospital. She took extra toes off a kitten, neutered a pot belly pig (a house pet), ultra-sounded many goats and
horses for pregnancies, treated a cat diagnosed with tularemia (highly contagious), removed a stone in a dog that is particular to this complication for his breed, and performed many cow toe amputations from injuries they get in the pasture. The most difficult part of her work is the sad news. “It is hard to be the bearer of bad news. The good part of each day is working with cattle, horses and small animals. I enjoy the diversity of this care.”
