WWCS baseball plans to dominate region

"This is a baseball town," said head coach Kip Erickson, "This year I’ve got 19 boys out for baseball, which is the most numbers I’ve ever had." The baseball season started off slow for the co-oped team with Washburn, Wilton, Center and Stanton. Weather may be dampening the baseball field, but it could never water down the spirit of the team and coaching staff. "The weather has been very poor, we have been inside quite a bit, we were out one day, and that was just to catch fly balls so that we could get used to it," Erickson said. Practice started on March 16, and Erickson is pleased with the size and strength of the team. He said that there are six seniors out this season, followed by about five juniors and an assortment of sophomores and juniors. Erickson expects numerous heavy hitters to step up and lead the Cardinals both on and off the field. "I don’t select captains," Erickson said, "I just appoint captains during each game, but it is usually two or three of my seniors." Erickson expects one of his top guys to be Charlie Retterath. "He and Cole Bender will be my number one and two, or two and one as pitching goes," he said.
