Wilton-Wing rises from potential elimination to district runner-up

Wilton, home of the most intense high school volleyball fans in the state, also happened to be the host of the District 10 volleyball tournament this year. People from Wilton and Wing packed their home floor to watch the Wilton-Wing Miners go from the only regional qualifying game of the tournament on the first day to playing in the championship game on the final day. Securing their regional spot on Monday with a win against the Underwood Comets, the Miners advanced to down Garrison-Max in the second round, earning them a chance to play for the district championship. After a tough battle with the Turtle Lake-Mercer-McClusky Trojans, the Miners found themselves taking home second place on Thursday. Against Garrison-Max in the second round, the Miners were on a roll in the first two sets, getting production out of their entire starting six. Multiple kills by Kaeley Schatz and Joey Heck along with aces by Lexi Hochhalter lifted the Miners to 25-18 and 25-7 in the first and second sets of the match. Garrison-Max’s Brianna Johnson gave Wilton-Wing some trouble in the third set with her big presence at the net, but the Troopers’ momentum didn’t carry with them after winning the third set. At the start of the fourth, Miner Sammie St. Claire put her team ahead right from the beginning and they never looked back, advancing to the district finals easily 25-13, winning the match 3-1.
