Wilton-Wing girls, Washburn boys win in doubleheader

The annual district doubleheader against the Washburn Cardinals and the Wilton-Wing Miners may not have been as highly anticipated this season as it has been in years past; but all the same, the parking lot of the Washburn High School was packed full and overflowing on to the street last week Tuesday when the two teams came head-to-head.

The Wilton-Wing girls held off a last minute rally by the Cardinals to take a 51-45 win in the first game before the Cardinal boys were too much for the Miners in the second game 51-30.

The Miner girls came into the game with some lingering troubles from earlier in the season. A team with speed and adept in creating turnovers, Wilton-Wing has had trouble getting the ball to fall through the hoop which inevitably has led to more than a fair share of losses for the team that came into the night 3-5 on the year.

On the other side, the Washburn girls have leveraged their small squad to modest success so far this season. Coming in 5-4, the Cardinals have become veterans of close games; winning the fourth quarter battles more often than losing them.

It was the Cardinals that came out looking like the better team in the first half. Although the Miners were creating turnovers with their speed, they were unable to convert most of those turnovers into points on the other end. And when the Cardinals were able to get their half-court game past the pressure of the Miners, Washburn was able to find the basket much more reliably than Wilton-Wing.
