Washburn-Wilton track takes off at first two meets

For the first several weeks of track practice, Mother Nature decided to disagree with not only the Washburn-Wilton track team, but with track programs across the state. Whether it was hurtles in the hallways, throwing events in the large gym or working on sprints throughout the gym and school, the Washburn-Wilton track team was determined to prepare themselves before their first meet of the season. The snow began to thaw and the skies warmed up a bit before Tuesday, when the Cards made their way to Hazen for the Beulah Miner Classic. The girls and boys teams were led by head coaches Shayla Sinclair and George Levey, and Sinclair said, "It was definitely our ‘first meet’ of the season, as we had a few things happen due to nervousness or lack of being able to work on certain things, because we hadn’t been able to get outside much." With warm weather and a light wind, these conditions were nothing compared to the indoor, or chilly outdoor running conditions that the Cards were used to practicing in. Several students did stand out throughout the day. "Some high scorers for us were Candy Ankenbauer, with third in high jump, and Kyle Sailer, third in the 200m dash," Sinclair said. Overall the Washburn-Wilton girls’ team took home ninth place out of 21 teams, with a total of 28 points.
