Washburn victorious in homecoming game

By Adam Thomas

Despite some nagging illnesses plaguing the team, the Cardinals scored a series of touchdowns early, which proved to be enough to sustain the lead for a 30-18 victory. Hettinger received the kickoff and start moving it down the field until Cardinal sophomore Monty Johnson introduced himself to the Hettinger’s QB Ander Thompson in the form of a big fourth down sack, his first of four sacks in the game, which turned the ball over on downs. The turnover led to Washburn drawing the game’s first score with junior Jeff Rasmussen running out of the pocket and through the red zone for 19 yards. The teams traded scores for the rest of the first quarter with the Black Devils’ Falkner breaking a 34-yard run, which was followed up by Rasmussen finding Junior Weston Deitz for a 21-yard touchdown pass for the Cardinals. Falkner was involved again in Hettinger’s next score courtesy of Ander Thompson’s 37-yard pass. With only seconds left in the first quarter, the Cardinal quarterback found senior Kier Vander Wal around the 30-yard line.
