Washburn rises above Wilton-Wing in DH
By Adam Thomas, BHG News Service
The always highly anticipated double-header match between the Washburn and Wilton-Wing basketball teams came and went on Tuesday last week with this year’s matchup held on the Cardinals’ home court. The clash of district opponents went distinctively one way in favor of the home team with both the boys and girls of Washburn coming through with impressive wins, the girls 41-34 and the boys 61-41. The most surprising game of the night was undoubtedly the first. Having been the recently crowned McLean County Champions, the Wilton-Wing Miner girls team was taking on a Washburn Cardinal girls team still looking to find their stride this season. The game opened not entirely unexpectedly. Washburn’s Kennedy Retterath had both field goals for the Cardinals in the first, but nobody found the basket for Washburn for the remaining 4:30 in the first quarter. With that lack of scoring for the home team, the Miners got out to a first quarter lead with Tienna Johnson and Heidi Clausen hitting shots for Wilton-Wing.
