Washburn repeats as Section 7 Champs

When it comes to competition in Section 7, Washburn coach Kip Erickson knows it’s going to be a battle between his team and Mercer County foes Hazen and Beulah. With a repeat trip to the American Legion State Tournament on the line, the Astros stood in the way but were taken down twice 14-6 and 12-4 en route to the title. “These two towns, Hazen and Beulah, are good baseball towns,” Erickson said. “You are always going to compete with them no matter who’s in with them. Those games are always going to be close at times. We needed to play good baseball.” From the beginning of the season, Post 12 has had some bumps in the road but one area they haven’t struggled too much is putting the bat on the ball. Everyone in the lineup registered a hit against Hazen as Washburn earned its second straight sectional championship. “We started hitting the ball and improving each game,” Erickson said. “The more competition we played these kids wanted to be there. They played hard every game. The hits come and nothing bothered them. They wanted to play the game and that’s a good thing.”
