Washburn Post 12 ties for third at state

By Michael Johnson, Editor

Years of tossing balls and perfecting their swing led a group of talented baseball players from Washburn, Wilton, Center and Stanton to form a strong team and take on teams of talented ball players at the 2011 State Legion Tournament in Bottineau. The end result showed that the boys of Post 12 match up well with the best players in the state. And while they didn’t come out with a first place finish, their eyes never left that goal. Post 12 ended the season earning a tie for third place with Grafton. Ahead of them were Casselton in first and Bottineau in second. It was Casselton that tossed Post 12’s chances out the window before defeating Bottineau to earn the state title for the second year in a row. Post 12 ended the season with a 26-10 record. The end of the season gave the team’s coach Kip Erickson an 86-32 record. He’s been with the team for three years. Some of the team members have been on for that long. Two of those, Wendlin Berger of Center and Jeffrey Rasmussen of Washburn, will not be returning next year. For them, it was a fight to the finish. Berger, a catcher for the team, is always a part of the action.
