Washburn outlasts TLMM

The Washburn Cardinals boys basketball team hasn't come up against many teams that have been able to pierce their brand of defensive-minded basketball in the commanding season they have had so far this year.
So it wouldn't be surprising if nobody could have foreseen that the 1-7 Turtle Lake-Mercer-McClusky Trojans were going to be one of those teams on Jan. 15.
With the Cardinals dealt their first loss a couple of weeks back against the Hazen Bison, Washburn's schedule since has been seemingly tailor-made to get the team back on an extended winning streak. In their last three games, including their most recent against TLMM, Washburn's opponents were a collective 1-21 on the season. With numbers like that, it can subconsciously lull a good team into a false sense of security.
It wasn't something that affected the Cardinals early in the week when they were on the road to take on district opponent Center-Stanton. Although the Wildcats threw the team some different looks, the Cardinals adapted quickly and were able to make it a comfortable win, 69-47.
