Washburn netters outlast Wildcats in four sets
Washburn evened its record at 1-1 in Region 5 with a 3-1 victory over Center-Stanton, Sept. 19, in Washburn.
The Cardinals improved to 8-3 overall, while the Wildcats fell to 1-2 in Region 5 play, and 4-13 overall.
Maggie Jennings fired three aces during a 12-0 run in the opening set that gave Washburn a 17-4 cushion, and the Cardinals maintained a double-digit advantage through the remainder of the set. Later, a kill by Sydney Ternes gave Washburn its biggest lead (22-7), and the Cardinals went on to win the set handily at 25-10. The match would become much more competitive after that.
An ace by Payton Berger gave CS a 7-5 advantage in the second set, but Washburn answered with an 8-2 run to take the lead for good, and Emma Vander Wal’s kill gave the Cardinals a 13-9 lead. The Wildcats cut the margin to two points twice over the next height serves, but Washburn got kills from Mae Jennings and Vander Wal, and after a violation on the Cardinals, Washburn ripped off four straight points to open up a 22-15 cushion. An error on Washburn momentarily slowed the run, but Ternes ripped a cross court shot for a kill, and then CS was whistled for violations on the next two serves to give the Cardinals a 25-16 victory for a 2-0 lead in the match.
