Washburn hosts Wildcats on back-to-back nights

In a season filled with constant double-headers, it’s sometimes refreshing to see a head-scratching schedule anomaly like what happened in Washburn last week. On Thursday, girls teams from both towns faced off against the Center-Stanton Wildcats and then, come Friday, the boys had their day on the court. The ladies went first and Washburn clearly had the upperhand for the entire game, winning 63-37. The men played it a bit closer, but the Wildcats pulled it out at the end with a slim 53-57 win. The full court defensive pressure for the Lady Cardinals set the tone early on Thursday, allowing for a number of steals and turnovers. Allison Weisgarber scored seven of the first nine Washburn points early in the game, giving her team a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish for the rest of the game. Center-Stanton found a bit of life in the second quarter, pulling down a lot of rebounds and forcing some ill advised Cardinal passes. A few shots by Wildcat KayDee Burger found their way through the Washburn defense, but the Cardinals still held a 12 point lead at halftime.
