On Saturday, Washburn High School hosted a volleyball tournament for varsity teams from all over the state. Washburn played three games in their pool before going into tournament play.
Washburn’s first game of the day was against the South Prairie Royals. They played two sets, and the match ended with a split. Both sets were close, and Washburn was able to come out ahead 25-23 in the first set. The second set was won 22-25 by South Prairie.
The Drake-Anamoose Lady Raiders were the Cardinals’ next opponent. Washburn started out aggressive, gaining them an 11-point lead early in the game. The Lady Raiders were able to push back, coming within one point at times. Thanks to the positive attitudes of the Cardinals, Washburn took control of the set and won 25-18. Their next set was even closer, with the lead team never having more than a four point advantage. Washburn was ahead for most of the game, and with the help of sophomore Madelyn Jennings’ spike past her competition, they were able to finish with a win 25-23.
Their third and final game before the official tournament was against the Divide County Maroons. The Cardinals were able to develop a lead of ten points, but the Maroons continued to claw their way back up. The score was in favor of Divide County near the end of the set, but after an out of bounds tip by the Maroons, Washburn was able to finish ahead 26-24. Not wanting to end with another loss, Divide County pushed themselves to lead at the very end of the set. Washburn was not able to fight back, ending up with a loss 21-25 and effectively ending in a split overall.
