Washburn girls set for triumphant return to state

For the past few years, the Washburn Girls basketball team has shown the potential to win it all, but they just couldn’t get over the hill that is the regional tournament to make the program’s return to the Elegant Eight team showdown of the State Class B Tournament. This year, coach Keith Jacobson and the 12-woman roster were able to coast through much of their competition, but when the time came to climb the regional tournament hill, the foot never let up off the gas pedal. Led by senior Samantha Schell and junior Spanky Clayton, the Cardinals put forward a team effort in the Region 5 tournament that flew by the Shiloh Skyhawks, out-dueled an explosive Standing Rock Warriors team and also tamed the sharpshooting Grant County Coyotes to earn a spot in the state tournament.
