Washburn Cardinals crowned district champions
By Adam Thomas, BHG News Service
As a team, they didn’t have to even show up in order to advance to the regional tournament; but not only did they show up, the Washburn Cardinal volleyball team put on a performance worthy of winning the district championship. Only having to play two games in the tournament, they beat the Underwood Comets 3-2 in their first game which put them in the championship game against the Turtle Lake-Mercer-McClusky Trojans which ended 3-1. With a first round bye, Washburn opened up the second day against Underwood on Tuesday. The Cardinals found themselves playing from behind early after the Comets went on a hitting streak and surged ahead 13-6 in the first set, prompting a time out from the Cardinal bench.
