Washburn advances with win

The Region 5 girls basketball tournament kicked off on Monday in Mandan. Due to the newspaper deadline only the first round was complete by press time. However, the Washburn Cardinals came out in the tournament opener against the Shiloh Skyhawks and made sure there would be more to report on next week, winning handily 69-28. Coach Jacobson had earlier expressed the need for his team to come out energetic and ready to play; at least for their first regional game, they didn’t disappoint. With one minute ticked off the clock, the game was tied at two points apiece but the Cardinals never allowed the Skyhawks the lead. The Samantha Schell and Spanky Clayton duo took over the first quarter and quickly put the Cardinals ahead.
