Velva buries Cards

A clean, scoreless second inning from the home team’s pitching staff stands out as a fleeting ray of sunshine in an otherwise dreary performance in Washburn’s 16-0 loss to Velva last Friday.
Down 7-0 headed into the fifth inning, the Red and White were smothered by an avalanche of nine runs, which warranted enacting the mercy rule.
Washburn couldn’t capitalize on its best opportunity to score following a ground-rule double by Maddie “Mad Dog” Jaeger in the third inning, as the Cards stranded two runners by striking out.
