Upgrades planned for baseball field

This year, local baseball enthusiasts are looking to even out the playing field - literally.
Todd Schreiner, Washburn Baseball Committee, approached the Washburn School Board last week with a plan to resurface and reshape the baseball field in town.
“In the infield, you need three things - clay, silt and sand,” Schreiner said. “The current infield we have is basically clay.”
Schreiner said when the clay is wet, it is mush. When it’s dry, he said, it feels like concrete.
“If you take a baseball or softball and throw it off the cement, that’s the effect you get here,” Schreiner said.
Schreiner said replacing the infield surfacing can be expensive, but that he would like to try a cheaper alternative.
