Two out of three for Cardinal boys

The Washburn boys basketball team faced a difficult three-day stretch last week, playing three games in three days. They had no problem finishing out the marathon, winning their last two; it was the first game that they struggled with. Having to recover from a tough district loss against the Trojans, the Cardinals went down to Flasher to bounce back with an easy 60-35 win against the Bulldogs. Capping off their third day, Washburn survived a second half Bowman County surge at the Civic Center to win their last game of the week 55-51. The first half against the Trojans was a fast-paced shoot-out with both teams running the court at every opportunity. Andrew Kaiser opened the game with a long three that was responded to with back-to-back TL-M-M three-pointers off the hands of Adam Peltier. Brett Schreiner returned a pair of steals for layups before Kirk Sailer and Evan Eberle ended the first quarter for the Cardinals on dual three-point shots and a 16-13 lead. The second quarter continued to be close, with the Cardinals taking advantage of an undisciplined inside defense for TL-M-M, using head fakes to draw the Trojan posts into the air for a foul or an easy slip-by layup. But their size benefited them on offense where the Trojans had a number of second chance points off of rebounds by their big men.
