Soccer registration nears

Though the future of the program seemed unsure earlier in the year, youth soccer in Washburn is now ready to hit the field.
Fields are being painted and jerseys being ordered for this year’s elementary soccer league. The 5-week league was lacking a coordinator and in danger of being canceled before Jeff Breinholt, of Dakota West Credit Union, stepped in to take over the program.
“I heard they needed someone and knew I couldn’t let it not happen this year,” Breinholt said. He moved to Bismarck and started working in Washburn in March.
Breinholt has spent the last few weeks rounding up donations from local businesses in order to help pay for new jerseys and necessities for the program, and said he was surprised by how many people have stepped up.
“I think in bigger cities, it’s easy to pass it on and say ‘someone else will take care of it,’ but that hasn’t happened here,” Breinholt said. He said donations were coming in and helping ease his concerns about paying for everything the kids would need.
Breinholt said everything was in place for a successful season, with new jerseys being ordered and the softball diamond field off of Riverboat Road being painted to create fields for the players.
