SM kicks off 2012 season with a win

By Adam Thomas, BHG News Service

The second year of the Southern McLean Roughrider football co-op is the first year under a brand new head coach Richard Bjerklie. The Wilton principal by day turned football head coach by night stepped onto the field with his new team for the first time against the Garrison Troopers on Saturday. The result of the trip into hostile territory was a promising first showing for the Roughriders. The Southern McLean offense took control of the game early by scoring three touchdowns in the first half while the defense made sure that the Troopers couldn’t sustain any momentum after that. The result was a comfortable 28-12 win for the Roughriders. This year’s team is still making adjustments to the changes of a new season. Christian Thompson steps in as quarterback for the Roughriders and dual senior running backs in Zach Hruby and Brett Schreiner will give the team a pair of leaders to look up to according to the team’s coaching staff. Scoring was done on both ends of the ball for the Roughriders in the first quarter. Brett Schreiner scored the first points of the game on a short 5 yard run before Grant Tweeten supplied a defensive touchdown later in the quarter by taking an interception 53 yards down the field and into the end-zone.
