Roughriders’ post-season chances dashed

It’s becoming a sort of tradition with the Southern McLean football program: leaving it up to the last game of the season to decide the fate of the Roughriders’ post season chances. For better or worse, the wins and losses added up to another pivotal encounter with the New Salem-Almont-Glen Ullin Holsteins on the home field for a Saturday afternoon game.
Both teams needed the win to claim fourth place in Region 4 which would allow them to enter the playoffs and likely play in a Kobayashi Maru-like scenario against the undefeated Rugby Panthers, number one seed out of Region 3 in the first round.
In what you might expect in such an important game, this one came down to the very last play with the Holsteins getting the win in double overtime, 18-12.
NSAGU struck first in the opening quarter: converting on two fourth downs on the drive, the second conversion coming on a fourth-and-15 pass straight into the end zone from Brandon Schroeder to Spencer Rebel. The 20 yard conversion put the Holsteins up 6-0, but a failed two point conversion left them without any additional points.
The Roughriders had a few good drives going in the first half but the ones that came close were abruptly stopped by turnovers. The first was a fumble after a long 30-yard pass put them into scoring position and then again in the middle of the second quarter with an interception ending a good drive that had Southern McLean only nine yards out from the end zone.
