Roughrider girls snare fourth at state

The Southern McLean Roughrider girls went into the state cross country meet with a strategy. They didn’t plan on being able to overtake the top few teams in the state, but they did have their sights set on finishing in the top five, which meant they had their sights set on the Beulah-Hazen, Killdeer and Rugby runners. If they could pass those runners, they would have a shot at placing in the top five.
The strategy worked, as the Roughrider girls placed fourth as a team, led by Kate Fox’s All-State 16th place finish with a time of 15:52.
"We knew we were the underdogs, we were not in the polls, nobody rated," said coach Laura Tweeten. "We said we’ll just sneak in, and we did. It was pretty awesome."
The girls finished fourth out of 37 teams, while the boys finished 24th out of 35.
The boys all ran personal bests, noted Tweeten, and it was the first time three of the boys had run at the varsity level.
