Rough games end Wilton-Wing’s season at Districts

"It’s a wide open district this year," commented one introspective fan as he sat waiting for the district tournament to start on Thursday. Apparently so wide open and so evenly matched that the third seeded Wilton-Wing Miners couldn’t make their way into the top four finalists at the end of the tournament and won’t be moving on to regionals this year. The Miners fell to the Sheridan County Coyotes in the first round 55-65 and then had to face off against the Max Cossacks in the second round in loser-out play. The Cossacks won the match and ended Wilton-Wing’s season 35-62. The Miners’ first game against the Coyotes was a game that was more or less decided in the first half. Sheridan County shot 60 percent from the field in the first half and hit seven of their nine three-point attempts. At the same time, the Miners were struggling to get the ball through the hoop as the Coyote shooting put them into a large 41-23 halftime hole. Wilton-Wing had better success in the second half, led by Alanna Smith and her 30 points. By the fourth quarter, the Miners had knocked the Coyote lead down to 10 points on the three-pointer by Samantha St. Claire. Even though they outscored their opponents in both second half quarters, there just wasn’t enough time to recover for the Miners as they eventually fell 65-55.
