Regional run ends in first round for Washburn

Coming out of the districts as a number two seed, the Cardinals came to the Bismarck Civic Center to play No. 3-seeded New Salem Holsteins in the first round of the Region 5 tournament on Monday night. Washburn struggled to get their offense started early and shot only 26 percent on the night in the game that saw New Salem light it up from everywhere on the court, resulting in a 64-44 loss for Washburn. The game started by teams swapping first baskets with Cardinal senior Camden Moran cutting into the lane for a layup and Washburn’s first points of the game. Monty Johnson would score the only other basket in the quarter for his team that seemingly couldn’t buy a bucket. On the other hand, New Salem got plenty of open looks by passing the ball into the lane for some easy layups and racked up a big 12-point lead by the end of the first quarter. Washburn’s offensive output picked up in the second, started off by Weston Dietz with a jumper from the free throw line. Brett Schreiner also added some points on a three-point shot and a layup to lead the team with five points in the first half.
