Promising season opener for Washburn girls

By Adam Thomas, BHG News Service

After earning a record extending 13th trip to the state tournament last year, the Washburn Cardinals Girls Basketball team stepped onto the court this season with only a handful of returning players and significantly younger and less experienced underclassmen backing them up. If there is anyone that you want on your bench in this situation, it’s the Wizard of Washburn, Keith Jacobson, and new assistant Coach Pablo Ronderos. Their first test took place on Thursday in a home game against the Center-Stanton Wildcats. The Wildcats lit up their side of the scoreboard first; using a bit of nifty passing they worked it down into the post for an easy layup, but that opening basket would be one of the two they made in the first quarter. The Cardinal team, on the other hand, was flowing like water: covering all corners of the court. Playing shut-down defense, they converted more than a few of their 34 total steals into baskets on the other end, thanks to the quick hands and fast-break running of Spanky Clayton, Cori Moberg and Kennedy Retterath.
