Post 12 ties for fifth at state legion

Most prep athletes dream of a chance at a state tournament trip in whatever sports they participate. Baseball coaches do as well. Washburn American Legion and high school baseball coach Kip Erickson has been at the helm of four teams in championship matches but 2010 was the first breakthrough for the veteran coach. His Post 12 baseball team won the Section 7 Tournament and then went on to tie for fifth place at the Class B State Tournament. "Now we’ve got the monkey off our backs," he said. "Does that mean I will ever get back here? I don’t know. The kids are the ones to decide that." Typically a batting average of over .400 puts a player at the upper crust level of sluggers. Washburn opened the state tournament with 14 hits and a batting average of .424 as a baseball team. The almost-unheard-of hitters were eventually not enough however as defending state champion LaMoure took advantage of 10 walks in the contest to advance 11-6 Wednesday.
