Post 12 cashes in a pair of wins to open Legion season

By Robyn Rohde, BHG News Service

After a disappointing end to the high school spring baseball season, head coach Kip Erickson is once again smiling after his Legion team’s first week of action. Washburn, including players from Wilton and Center-Stanton, claimed two commanding victories last Thursday as they made the extensive trip to Bowman County. Post 12 was scheduled to take on the Cyclones from Beulah Monday, but weekend rain showers made both field unplayable. The reschedule date of the doubleheader is June 28. Last Thursday Post 12 suited up for a long bus ride for a rather late start and the first inning had the home team ready with a jump start. Bowman outscored Post 12 2-1 in the first inning but by the third, Washburn was ready for some retaliation. Mitch Wachendorf led the way as he went 4-for-4 with a double. The score was 5-4 Post 12 after the third inning. "We weren’t awake right away but when you drive that long, you’re going to make some mental mistakes," Erickson explained. Post 12 never backed down as they chipped in another run in the fourth and two in the fifth. By the sixth inning, Bowman was beginning to break down. Cole Bender stepped up to the plate in the perfect position, waiting for the sweet ball he sent flying for a grand slam. Bender finished the game going 3-for-3 at the plate.
