Miners turn tables on Comets
By Adam Thomas, BHG News Service
District games are the most important regular season games on a team’s schedule as they determine the standings going into the district tournament. Not only are they important, but they are typically games against people you know, giving you that extra little feeling of personal pride to play until the very final whistle. Whatever their motivation, the Wilton-Wing Miners kept their heads up when the chips were down against the Underwood Comets last week on a Thursday night. With Wilton-Wing down two sets to none, the game looked to be squarely in the bag for the Comets. However, the Miners were steadfast, not letting down their defenses despite the odds and mounted a spirited comeback to win the game 3-2. In both the first and second sets of Thursday night’s game, Wilton-Wing gave up long runs of points off the hands of the Comet hitters; also strings of aces took a toll on the confidence of the Miner back row. Led by the frequently hard-hitting Abby Landenberger, Underwood took the first couple of sets with relative ease, 25-16 and 25-19. Through those early defeats the Miners weren’t entirely without positive plays, but they couldn’t put enough of them together to break the Comets’ momentum. That would change in the game’s remaining sets.
