Miners, Trojans do battle

The Miners traveled to Turtle Lake-Mercer-McClusky on Feb. 2 hoping to extend their win streak to five. After knocking off Underwood the week before, the Miners wanted to even up with the Trojans in the district as the Trojans were 4-1 coming into the game. The Miners were 3-2 and would hold the tie break by beating the Trojans.

The game opened with each team playing at a very ferocious level on both ends of the floor. The Miners’ opening halves this season have been very good. Nick Backman had a good game on the both ends, rebounding and blocking shots. He opened the game with six points. Tate Dickson has been playing well, even though he has been suffering from a broken thumb. Dickson rolled his ankle in the first quarter, and had to sit on the bench for a bit as they taped him up. He was able to continue, but was held scoreless in the first half. Regardless, the first quarter ended with the Miners up by two, 11-9.

In the second, both teams hit the floor many times for loose balls and pestered each other’s shooters. The Miners and Trojans cooled off a bit and were able to only score six points apiece heading into halftime. Backman led the team with 10 points in the half while Tanner Freeman for the Trojans had four. At halftime the Miners were still up by two 17-15.
