Miners fall short in opener

It was a back and forth fight through the final minutes of last week’s Miner volleyball season opener, with the Wilton-Wing girls duking it out with the Strasburg/Zeeland Clippers over four tight sets.
The Clippers opened up the scoring in the first set, taking a small lead over the home team. The Miners would trail close behind and even up the scoreboard occasionally, but the first set would go to Strasburg, who took a 25-21 win.
Wilton-Wing pushed back in the second, managing to get ahead of the Clippers with some bold digs and crafty aces. The teams went point by point at the top of the set, each taking a narrow lead over the other until Strasburg pulled away with a couple kills and a 25-22 victory.
The Miners again fought a tight battle in the third set, this time managing to sneak a few balls past the Clippers and pull ahead. Wilton-Wing would hold a 24-23 lead and get the serve, hoping to lock in the set. The Clippers weren’t giving it up easily, volleying the ball back to the Miner side but eventually succumbing to Wilton-Wing, who took the set 25-23.
