Miners enter regional after district fourth place

The phrase most associated with the post-season is ‘Go Big or Go Home’. The Wilton-Wing boys basketball team didn’t have a great season on the court this year, but the district tournament marks the beginning of a post-season where teams get a new lease on life and the hardest working teams live to fight another day. The Miners needed a strong effort in three straight games if they wanted to get into the region tournament. Their players answered that call on the floor in Garrison. On day one, the Miners outplayed a quick Max Cossack team 66-47 to face the tournament number one seed in the semi-finals: Turtle Lake-Mercer-McClusky. In a game that wasn’t decided until the final minutes, the Miners nearly caught the Trojans off guard but the 70-59 loss put Wilton-Wing into a loser-out scenario on the tournament’s final day. With a 48-34 victory against Underwood on Saturday to close out their district tournament, the Miners stamped their ticket to the regional. Wilton-Wing had the privilege of setting the tone for the entire tournament when they played the first game of the tournament on Thursday against the Max Cossacks. A three-man effort in the first half helped the Miners go into halftime ahead by six points. Connor Thompson grabbed the rebounds for a pair of put-backs and Christian Thompson made his mark on the scoreboard from the three-point line.
