One week removed from their spectacular run to claim the District 10 crown, the Wilton-Wing Miners girl’s basketball team stepped into the Mandan High School gym for the next level in their post-season progression: the Region 5 tournament.
Starting out the three day tournament, the Miners moved out of the first round by soundly defeating the Flasher Bulldogs, and in doing so assured the program’s best finish in many years by surviving to the tournament’s second day.
However, despite continuing their high level of play in the second round, Wilton-Wing couldn’t outlast the Grant County Coyotes in the semi-finals. That loss left the Miners to play against the Underwood Comets on the tournament’s final day for third and fourth place; a game that went to the Comets, finishing Wilton-Wing’s season as the region’s fourth place team.
The Miners faced off against the Flasher Bulldogs in the first round of regionals on Monday night last week. It was easy to see that Wilton-Wing hadn’t lost a step over the seven-day break, starting off the tournament with a break-away first quarter.
Heidi Clausen and Paige Hausauer got things rolling while Jocelyn Bergquist began hitting shots mid-way through the quarter as the team amassed a 24-4 lead at the end of one.
