Looking back at ‘quality’ season

The Southern McLean Roughrider cross country teams wrapped up their season last Friday at Parkhurst Recreation Area just outside Jamestown. At the North Dakota Class B State Cross Country Championships, the Roughriders competed against the best runners in the state of North Dakota. After a season that saw unusually warm temperatures, the weather was ideal for all the runners.

The girls raced first. Coming off their West Region Championship two weeks prior, the Roughriders came into the race shooting for a top 5 finish. Standing in their way were five very strong teams from the East Region – Rugby, Kindred, MayPort-CG, Hillsboro, and Grafton. Although the girls ran well, they came up just short. Led by Jordyn Thorson, a dual-sport athlete who joined the team halfway through the season, the girls finished in 6th. Thorson finished 21st, just missing the top-20 and All-State status. Kari Patterson came in 34th, Grace Boysun was 46th, Chev Obering was 58th, and rounding out the scoring was their lone senior,
Brynn Hyttinen in 64th. Also competing for the Roughriders at State were Natalie Ronderos
(100th)and Aubrey Steinert (201st). There were 263 runners in the girls’ race.
