The Wilton-Wing Miners JV basketball team headed to Underwood this last weekend to play in the McLean County eight-team tournament.
The Miners drew the Bismarck High team Thursday night in the quarterfinals. Bismarck came out and played great defense on the Miners, limiting them to only eight points in the first quarter, while Bismarck shot well and was up by seven at the first break. The Miners hung around in the second but didn’t get the ball to go their way, remaining down by eight at halftime, 26-18.
In the third, Bismarck poured it on and at one point had the lead as muvh as 12. The Miners continued to battle throughout the match, never letting BHS get a big enough lead to feel comfortable. The Miners were still down by eight going into the fourth, but they felt they were still in it. The Miners chipped away at the lead in the fourth, and with 4.9 seconds left, Taylor Bergquist hit a shot from the wing to give the Miners the first lead of the game. That would be the final shot of the game taken with the Miners winning a thriller over BHS, 41-40. Lauren Koski finished with a team high 12, Jade Koski with seven, along with Bergquist with seven and the game winner.
On Saturday, the Miners took on the Garrison Troopers, a team they had previously faced earlier in the season.
"We are a team that likes to push the ball and get out and run, and Garrison's zone slowed us down," assistant coach Jocelyn Bergquist said of her team’s play.
