Lady Cardinals start on top, end on top: Number one in district

By Danielle Abbott

In 2004, the Washburn girls basketball team stole the first place in the District. Though five years and a lot of changes have come and gone since their last championship standing, the girls’ goal for the 2008-2009 season was to bring the trophy back home. At the end of their regular season, the Washburn girls basketball team was seeded number one in District 10, which awarded them a bye for the first round of district tournament play in Turtle Lake on Thursday. The Cards made the trip to watch the other teams play and sum up their competition for the following two days. During their first round bye, Max beat out Wilton in game one, which ultimately led Max to be paired against Washburn for their first game of the tourney. The Friday night game kicked off at approximately 6 p.m., and immediately the stands were packed with Cardinal red pride. Within the first minutes, it was apparent that Washburn was there not only to play, but to win. The game could be considered a blow out, finishing of with a 65-37 win for the Cardinals. By the final buzzer, every player had made their way in for some floor time and the domination of Max truly was a team effort. "The Cardinals came out and played very hard throughout the game. I was very pleased with our effort," head coach Keith Jacobson said.
