The odds of it happening at some point in the season were likely; players sometimes have bad nights and there are times when calls just don’t go your way. Those odds finally caught up to the Washburn Cardinal girls basketball team in their first loss of the year coming against the Grant County Coyotes on Friday night. After a 65-34 drubbing of the Garrison Troopers on Tuesday night, Washburn took on Grant County at home and they came in with a plan that executed well enough to topple the Cardinals from their undefeated platform, 51-43. "I really don’t think losing at home is ever a good thing," said Washburn Head Coach Keith Jacobson when asked about the prevailing opinion that getting a loss out of the way was a good thing. Starting off against the Troopers, Washburn held steady against their district opponent, tripling Garrison’s first quarter total and leading by 16 points. Spanky Clayton and Samantha Schell both had a game-high 18 points as the entire game was Washburn continuing to build on an already comfortable lead, finally coming to rest at 31 points in the Cardinals’ favor.
