Johnson sets school record

The Southern McLean track team attended their second track and field meet of the year in Hazen last week, fielding tracksters at the Sakakawea Country Classic on April 26. The team’s coaches also made a command decision to switch their end of the week meet from Velva to one that started plenty earlier in Bismarck amid weather concerns. Not only did that change allow them to get a full meet in, but it also gave their athletes another chance to test themselves against Class A competition. “With meets that bring Class A to the table, of course the competition will be a lot stiffer. At those types of meets we focus on our best events,” said Southern McLean Track Coach Shayla Sinclair. They had a number of top ten finishes at the Bismarck meet, but their biggest winners came in the field events. Monty Johnson took first in the pole vault while teammate Grant Tweeten placed fifth in the high jump event. On the girls’ side, Candace Ankenbauer captured second place in the high jump and Cori Moberg had sixth in Javelin. It was a good showing in Bismarck, but the team’s meet in Hazen really showed off what these athletes are capable of.
