Homecoming brings a Roughrider win

The Southern McLean Roughriders celebrated a win on Friday against the Garrison-Max Troopers. Not only was this the Roughriders’ homecoming game, it was also the 24th year the teams have competed for the Mega Bowl trophy. Southern McLean has won this trophy for the past three years, and their goal was to keep it another year.
The game started off slow for the Roughriders, with no points being scored for Southern McLean during the first quarter. However, the Troopers were able to score a touchdown, putting them in the lead 6-0. These six points would be the only points scored in the first quarter.
Eager to come back, the Roughriders had two key possessions that gave them the lead. The first touchdown of the quarter was a 30-yard pass from Cameron Hall to Nolan Teigen. A 12-yard pass to Dylan Williams would give Southern McLean their second touchdown. With a two-point conversion scored, the Roughriders brought their lead to 14-6. Another touchdown pass was attempted in the second quarter, but to no avail. The long pass would be bobbled in the endzone between Nick Backman and Tate Bertolotto, but between the two, the pass was dropped.
During halftime of the homecoming game, both the Washburn and Wilton Homecoming Royalty were recognized in front of the football fans. Trevor Schreiner and Alexis Acevedo were announced as Washburn’s Homecoming King and Queen. Taylor Bergquist and Nick Backman were presented as Wilton’s Homecoming King and Queen.
