Golf season off to a quick start for Washburn

Head Coach Phil Hentsch’s Washburn golf teams started competing in mid-April this year. There isn’t any snow left on the ground this time around, but that doesn’t mean the conditions have been pristine for hitting a tiny golf ball high into the air. That’s because most of the meets for Washburn thus far have been met by Aeolus and his weapon of choice, the wind. Starting off with the girls, Washburn doesn’t have enough varsity players to field an official team at the moment, with many of the inexperienced players taking their cuts at the junior varsity level. But the two varsity golfers, Alex Leidholm and Hanna Borner, are still looking to play at a high level individually. Despite the wet, rainy day at the Hazen invitational on April 13, both of Washburn’s varsity girl golfers had good showings in their first meet of the year with Leidholm taking sixth place overall with a 99 and Borner close behind in eighth place shooting 102 on the course. In their second meet, the Standing Rock Invitational on April 20, the girls played at Prairie West in Mandan. Leidholm captured fifth place shooting 97 and Borner lost a tiebreaker, which landed her in eighth place with a 99.
