Garrison Dam Hatchery – birthplace of millions
By Stu Merry, BHG News Service
Wanna hook a Chinook? Like to net a walleye? Care that prehistoric fish are able to live on in present day, avoiding extinction at the hands of man? You can thank the folks at the Garrison Dam National Fish Hatchery near Riverdale. Millions of fish can thank their existence to the operation of the hatchery. And hundreds of anglers can thank the hatchery, too, because if there were no hatchery to provide stockfish to North Dakota lakes and beyond, it would be a pretty quiet day on the water. More than 178 million walleye fingerlings have been hatched at the fish hatchery. "That’s a pile of little fish," said Rob Holm, project leader at the fish hatchery.
