Fox wins at Velva opening meet

Southern McLean’s Kate Fox nabbed first place honors at the Velva cross country meet this past Friday, as the sophomore won the 4K race with a time of 16.31. Teammate Tienna Johnson finished 19th with a time of 19.07, while MaKayla Koski placed 46th with a time of 23.21. For anyone in the know about Southern McLean’s cross country team, there is a name noticeably absent among the top finishers – Abby Waloch, one of the state’s premier cross country runners. Waloch started the race, noted Roughrider coach Laura Tweeten, but she was pulled from the race about a mile-and-a-half into it as she was still struggling with a foot injury she suffered recently when she stepped on a nail. She is also having some ankle problems, so rather than make the situation worse by making her run all-out too early, Tweeten pulled her pretty early.
